Photographing Children Photography Workshop | Creative Edge

What a DAY!!!  Beautiful weather, four absolutely adorable child models, three shoot locations and great students.  We started out at my studio, going over our photography plan, discussing lighting and answering any questions.  Then off to an alley(yes, an alley!!) to meet our first set of fabulous kids: Aaron and Grace.  Aaron was looking very cool and Grace was simply charming.  These kids were great and we got some amazing shots in the alleyway. Then we headed to a field of golden straw  to find our next two models: Anna Scott and Adeline.  It was very exciting to photograph them again, because I knew their Mom would come prepared with a wide selection of clothes, props and a variety of accessories. We got some incredible shots of them. I thought it would be fun to bring in some furniture to add to the mix!! I  just love the look of furniture outdoors in the photographs!!

Aaron looked so cool just looking back at the camera in the old alleyways. A big smile was not what I wanted for this shot, and I added texture to the picture to give it the vintage look.

Using direct sun and a low camera angle to make it a more dramatic shot, eliminating distracting background and saturating the blue sky.

When we photograph children, we like to let them have fun– Just be kids!! This allows us to capture their true personalities.

Shallow depth of field brings your eyes directly to Anna Scott and not the background.

Always be ready so you can capture real moments when they happen.  Often they happen for only a split second and then they are gone.

All of the shots in the field are taken by backlighting the girls with the sun and using a reflector to add nice warm light in the their faces.

Expressions, expressions, expressions!!!!!! Absolutely adorable EXPRESSIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Putting negative space to the side of this image turns it into an art piece. Plus, now it will  compose as a two page spread in a coffee table book.  Just as an added note,  Adeline and Mary Scott are off to Colorado, as they have been selected to model in the Matilda Jane catalog………………….CONGRATULATIONS girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!
