Introduction to Photography Workshop Atlanta | Creative Edge

Our Introduction to Photography Workshop has gotten so popular…….. we had TWO this month!! Our model, Kara did an amazing job, if you listen 94.5 on the radio then you probably have heard her on the air,  she agreed to model for us and she was great!  The workshop started at the Moreland studio, but I wanted to take everybody on location…  so we could demonstrate various lighting situations.  We went to a big open field to finish up the workshop. Not only did everyone learn all about their camera, but all participants got the most incredible images imaginable.  Remember, photographers-novice to pros-can publish any/all images from the workshops, as our models sign a release for this very reason!!

We poised her so the open sky would reflect into her face, then by using a large reflector it added the great catch lights into her eyes.  Remember eyes always make a picture so you have get light into their eyes.I love sun flare, just shooting into the sun gave the picture on the left the extra impact I wanted.  When shooting for flare, use a wide F-stop and watch carefully how the flare will change depending on how much you tilt your camera toward the sun.  Go the look the you want and in this case forget the histogram and view the lcd to get the look you want, you probably will want to underexpose the shot because of the flare.We found this old pump house at the part and it made for a great background.  Always look for textures and anything interesting and remember it is just what the camera sees in the shot so your background could be a metal dumpster but you can compose the shot to only show the cool texture as a background.It is all in the eyes, so as I keep saying……get light in the eyes.I love backlighting, just put the sun behind your subject and use a reflector to bounce the beautiful light into their eyes.  Of course shoot early morning or late in the day whenever possible.  We also put her on the ground in this shot to eliminate distracting backgrounds.  Yes lighting, poising, composition is always important and also the choice lens which in this case was a 200mm lens to make the background go out of focus.  But watch the background and if it is distracting, then shoot up or shoot down to eliminate the background.Backlighting and Sun Flare is all I need to say.the last minutes of sunlight is the beautiful magic time of the day.  See how the light has already dropped off the fence behind her, when the sun starts to go down it will drop like a rock. Find the light and put your model into the light like we did here.  If you do not have a reflector then use the sky as reflector or in this case use the sun to illuminate and make the shot
